Celebration of Connection, Culture, and Community: The Bemnet Family
This May, we’re thrilled to shine a light on one of the warmest and most dynamic families in our tennis community.
Originally from Ethiopia, the family’s journey to the U.S. began in 1999 when Hana ( mother ) immigrated to join her parents and in 2005 Bemnet (father) immigrated in search of better opportunities. Over the years, the family has built a life full of activity, love, and togetherness.
Their connection to our tennis center started unexpectedly—through a summer camp in Ethiopia in 2022—which sparked their interest and blossomed into ongoing involvement here in the U.S. Since then, they’ve become a vibrant part of our community, known for their kindness, positivity, and friendly interactions with staff and families alike. On Saturday morning, you’ll see all 4 of the children participating in our Junior Development classes!
Outside the court, the family’s calendar is packed with energy and creativity. Eden played soccer, volleyball, race in sailing and plays trombone in symphonic band, Rakeb plays soccer, volleyball, sail and plays clarinet in symphonic band; Maki sings in choir, ballet, and enjoys sailing and swimming while Jacob budding musician, enjoys playing piano and guitar, play soccer with Celtics and also race in sailing . Music is a huge part of their home life, often filled with dancing, singing, and joyful noise.
Their parents lead by example: Mom, a full-time social worker, finds joy in hiking, traveling, and time with family, while Dad, an enthusiastic tutor, and mentor jokingly serves as the family’s “unpaid Uber driver.” Together, they make time for road trips, biking adventures, and exploring new places, with spontaneity often leading to surprise family getaways to places like Canada.
Their deep gratitude is at the heart of everything—for their health, shared experiences, and the welcoming environment they’ve found at the tennis center. The coaches, they say, have made a meaningful impact on their children’s development—physically, mentally, and socially—helping them grow in confidence and form lasting friendships.
From home made lasagna nights at home to chocolate treats for dessert, this family brings flavor, rhythm, and heart to every space they enter. We’re honored to celebrate them this month and grateful for the joy they bring to the tennis family!
