November Member Spotlight: Amilla (Millie) Matthews
Millie’s Tennis Journey
Millie’s tennis story began back in September 2013, when the Tennis and Sandpoint School first opened. As one of the very first junior members, she started out in Red Ball 1 Saturday classes, quickly showing promise and passion for the game.
Throughout her journey, Millie has trained in Junior development group classes, small group lessons, and benefited from the energy and encouragement of Coach Cannon, whose dynamic lessons inspired her to pursue additional private sessions.
“Millie shines for her positivity, dedication, and team spirit. She consistently brings energy and fun to every practice, pushing herself to improve while inspiring her teammates with her enthusiasm and smiles. Known for her strong work ethic and uplifting attitude, Millie sets the tone for those around her. Her exceptional commitment stands out—during the 2025 summer camps, she attended more sessions than anyone else, ensuring each week was filled with effort, excitement, and encouragement”. – Coach Cannon Sullivan
One of Millie’s favorite parts of Sandpoint tennis is the supportive, welcoming community. She recalls the fun of giving coaches nicknames (like calling Coach Andrew “Nemo”) and cherishes the friendships and laughter that make each practice memorable.
Her early match-play experiences — especially her first round-robin tournament at TCSP during the Orange Match Play Event — stand out as vivid milestones that helped her embrace competition and build confidence. She still remembers it as the first time she managed a rally lasting more than two shots.
High School Tennis
When Millie joined Seattle Prep’s tennis team, she felt fully prepared thanks to years of training at Sandpoint. The skills, discipline, and resilience she developed carried seamlessly into her high school career. She especially enjoys seeing familiar faces from Sandpoint across the net — friendly rivalries that make every match special.
Beyond the Court
Millie’s talents extend far beyond tennis. She has spent eight years running cross country, including all four years in high school. She describes it as “the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” but credits the experience with strengthening her endurance — both mentally and physically — which translates beautifully to her tennis game.
Music is another big part of Millie’s life. As an alto in Seattle Prep’s choir, she’s performed in four concerts a year and competed annually in Ellensburg, where her choir earned one of only two awards among 16 schools. Her favorite song to sing is “Crowded Table,” by The Highway Women.
Life Outside School
At home, Millie’s constant companion is Max, her 5-year-old English cream golden retriever — affectionately called her “replacement sibling” while her brother is away at college. Max is polite to a fault, always waiting for permission (and a nod from Millie) before hopping onto her bed.
Her brother, a Pomona-Pitzer football player, is currently a junior in California. Millie loves visiting to watch his games and cheer him on from the stands.
Coaching and Community Involvement
Millie also gives back to her community as a Special Olympics gymnastics coach at Seattle Gymnastics Academy in Ballard. She leads one team of younger athletes (ages 5–8) and co-coaches another for ages 9–21.
She speaks warmly about the annual fall competition — a supportive, joy-filled event where every athlete is recognized for their effort. Millie finds deep fulfillment in helping athletes grow, especially one student with severe autism who has made incredible progress through patience, trust, and consistent encouragement.
Fun and Favorite Pastimes
When she’s not studying, practicing, or coaching, Millie enjoys relaxing with friends at school football games, swimming in lakes during the summer, and grabbing lunch at Pagliacci’s or Starbucks. At home, she loves her quiet time — watching Gossip Girl or Gilmore Girls and indulging in well-earned naps to recharge.
Looking Ahead
As graduation approaches, Millie is in the midst of college applications. She hopes to major in Special Education and dreams of working in a classroom setting where she can continue to make a difference in young lives. Her top choices include Cal Poly, Loyola Marymount University, and Gonzaga University.
TCSP has been fortunate to have Millie as a junior member for the past 12 years. Anyone who spends time with her can’t help but leave with a smile — her positivity is contagious, and she truly is a shining star within our community.
